Lucie Rie (British, Austrian-born, 1902-1995)

Rie is one of the most famous British ceramicists of the 20th century. She studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts & Crafts) and rapidly set up her own studio producing innovative brightly-coloured pottery. In 1938, she fled Nazi persecution and settled in London where she made a living by producing buttons, jewellery and other ceramic objects. Later she was joined by Hans Coper who became a partner in her studio. Her hand-thrown pots from the period are well known for their Modernist form, flaring necks and use of bright colours, often also including her distinctive sgraffito decoration. Rie taught at the Camberwell School of Art and was honoured as a Dame Commander (DCE) in 1991. Her works are highly sought after at auction.
